Does anyone have experience with sending their livelihood back to their home country?

Probably anyone able to answer is not allowed to, because it probably means they don’t live in Japan anymore, but i’ll try anyways, feel free to dm me too, if you have experience.

So I just recently came to Japan (around 2 months ago) and for now I am not sure if I will be able to stay for more than a year. However moving into an unfurnished apartment, I amassed a lot of stuff. I don’t want to have to get rid of everything, so I thought maybe I could ship all my stuff via freight container back to my home country when the time to return comes.
Does anyone know how customs would work in this case, does it matter if everything I send is used stuff and how would the process work? Are there companies offering to Pick everything up or would I have to organize the transport to next port myself?

  1. I don’t think that’s what livelihood means

Unless you have very expensive stuff, or it’s very emotionally important to you, it will be much more cost effective to sell it and buy new stuff.

You can contact someone like Nittsu, and they will take things door to door and handle customs, but it will cost you.

  2. Depends on the country you’re sending it too. But be aware that shipping via container is extremely expensive these days! My friend just paid over $10.000 to ship her stuff from another Asian country to Japan (well, her company paid).

  3. Yeah, the cost of shipping anything overseas is very expensive, let alone cargo and delivery. You’ll probably be looking at costing many times the worth of your stuff.

Most people just sell their large stuff, maybe pay for extra and oversize baggage for their flight, pack their suitcases and go.
