Applying for visa for newborn

My wife and I are expecting a baby in January, and we’re currently living in Hiroshima but plan to travel back to the US for the birth, where Im a citizen and she’s a green card holder.

Curious if just getting the newborn an American passport would be sufficient at first to bring her in and apply for a visa here, or if we’d need to wait in the US for a dependent visa for the newborn?

If anyone has any experience, anecdotes, or have dealt with this would love to hear your thoughts or experience.

– I’m in Japan on a work visa and my wife as a dependent.
