Technically Godzilla (gojira) is a portmanteau of “Gorilla” and “Kujira” – the Japanese word for whale. So Gojira/Godzilla is a “Gorilla/Whale.” There is no lizard at all. Given that Gojira/Godzilla smashes cities like King Kong, it makes sense.
