Report tax to tax office while being an employee

I’ve always had my income tax all managed by my company with a year-end tax adjustment form to fill at the end of the year.

This year I’m not eligible to the year-end tax adjustment process and so I will need to file a final tax report between mid Feb and mid Mar.

The thing is they don’t give any guidance and I have no idea what to do.

Do you need to create an account online? Do you just go the ward’s local tax office without any reservation?

  1. you are better off in the japan finance sub, but

if you have my numbers card, buy a 1000 yen card reader from amazon

then you can do your tax through e-tax portal from the government

it’s not hard if you can read Japanese

  2. You do it through the e-Tax website. It’s much easier with a My Number card, as it has some tax information attached to it that will be implemented automatically if you use it.

Hold on to all your medical receipts, insurance receipts, documents regarding mortgage and dependents if you have them. Around the end of the tax year, the company or companies you worked for should send you a slip (源泉所得税証明書) that details how much they paid you that year, and you type all the information into the e-Tax system. It will calculate if you paid too much or too little and work out if you can get some money back or have to pay more in.

The system went down during the last few days before the deadline last year, so try to get it done early.

  3. Check out r/japanfinance but yea you can do it online, the government has an e-tax website. alternatively you can file it with your local tax office with a physical tax return.

If you dont have a my number card, you can goto your local tax office once and get them to create a username and password for you on the e-tax site if you want to use the online site.
