Health insurance raised after moving

I used to pay around 1600 monthly for my national health insurance. After moving and registering to the new municipality, I now have to pay around 6500 monthly. My girlfriend who I moved in with only pays 1600 for hers. Anyone knows why this is? Can’t seem to find the reason online.

  1. Your health insurance is based on the income you made the previous year. For newcomers who have no history (as in no previous year to base anything on) the health insurance is really low — like what you said, about 1600 in a month. I’m assuming that’s the bare minimum but I’m not sure.
    There’s apparently one other possibility:
“The other reason is not filing your tax return.
…If you didn’t submit your tax return then the city cannot confirm your previous year’s income so will charge you the highest rate of premiums.”
So either your girlfriend has no income or has just come to Japan, correct?

  2. How much did you earn last year?
I have to pay around 20.000 only for the health insurance which is very expensive.
