Hi there.I am Canadian, but I work in software sales in Japan, which means I talk to people on the phone, over email, and in person, in a number of situations, obviously all in keigo. Not sure if anyone would be interested in an AMA, but, AMA!

As far as I can tell, there are *very* few foreigners doing this kind of work in Japan who weren’t born and/or raised here, so I’m kind of a black sheep in a way. If anyone wants to know what it’s like, how I got here, or just ask questions about Japanese, but I am more than happy to answer.

Just a brief introduction:

1. I am Canadian
2. I graduated university in August of 2019, moved here in October 2019, got my first job in December 2019
3. Joined this foreign SaaS (software as a service) company as one of the initial 4 members in March.
4. I am the only foreigner in the sales team (unless you count a Chinese member who is a pre-sales engineer)
5. I started studying Japanese seriously in 2016, before that was really just learning to do a self-introduction

  1. Any tips for getting a software position like that? Seems fast turnover. Is a bachelors an absolute must? Would a 2 year CC diploma suffice? Thanks for your time.

  2. Any good resources or advice for learning keigo, especially for people not living in Japan right now?

  3. What’re the perks in living in Japan over Canada? After about 2 years, if you were still in Canada, would you still move?
