Sciatica

I’m just exhausted dealing with this, on top of all the other crap I’m going through right now. My orthopedist takes a very cautious approach, prescribed the lowest possible dosage of pain meds and said “let’s see how it goes for the next couple of weeks.” Meanwhile I’m in agony and can barely stand up straight. Why so stingy with the meds? How do you deal with back pain? Should I just go OTC? What’s the best brand out there, in your experience?

  1. I’ve had bad sciatica before and my doctor also prescribed pain medication you can also buy over the counter. It helped, but not completely so I tried some stretches I found online. That helped a bit more. Unfortunately there isn’t really a magic bullet that cures sciatica.

If the current treatment isn’t working it might be worth going back to the doctor, pleading your case and asking what else they can do for you. Remember you can go to another doctor for a second opinion or you can ask if they’ll write you a letter of recommendation for a larger hospital if it’s affecting your life that much.

  2. Look for a sports physiotherapist.

I had some lower back pain with a herniated disc. The doctor gave me pain meds and told me to stop doing any exercise.

Thought it was total bullshit that that was the only course of action they could give me. Went to a sports physiotherapist, they took some X-rays, put me on a rehab program, got weekly massages and had a few sessions with a personal trainer too (all covered by health insurance). One year later I don’t feel any pain at!
