What is your favourite public onsen destination?

Today’s question is: What is your favourite public onsen destination?

Some people like to get their onsen fix in a private room with a view of Mt. Fuji. Other like to visit multiple destinations during the day.

If you like the latter, tell us – which is your favourite one? Beppu Hells? The 7 Mystic Onsen of Kinosaki? Or some destination in a heart of Japanese Alps?

Tell us which public onsen destination in Japan you would recommend to fellow sub users.

Please note that this thread is about public onsen accessible without staying at a specific resort or ryokan only.

  1. For me, Kusatsu and Yamanouchi. Both have loads of tiny onsen spread over the town and are great places to visit for a couple days

  2. I don’t like massive onsen towns or luxury options much. What I do like is the Benifuji no Yu in Yamanakako. Nice views of Mt Fuji, nice pools.

Wouldn’t recommend making the trip just for this, though. But goes well with a day trip to the Fuji Five Lakes region – be it to enjoy nature or Fuji Q.

  3. I only went one *onsen* in Japan and it was spectacular: Shibu Onsen in Nagano not far from the Jigokudani Monkey Park. During winter, the place is eerily quite but felt magical during snowfall.
