Anyone have experience converting from 家族滞在 visa?

Hi all,

My wife had a child recently. She used to be a technical intern before we were married and had our kid. My company’s lawyers were able to switch her to the dependent, 家族滞在 visa. It’s been almost a year and my wife is thinking of working again.

Only problem is, in this country spouses of non Japanese nationals are only permitted to work up to 28 hours a week (on this visa type) (yes, my wife has work authorization) asinine system but I won’t go into my gripes with it right now 😅

Has anyone found difficulties or discrimination from companies that sponsor visas, once said companies see you are on the family visa? Any issues getting sponsorship for, example, an English teaching role?

We have begun applying but some companies mentioned already they only hire her nationality (Filipino) if you are long term resident/spouse/PR/ basically don’t need sponsorship (even though said company does sponsorship. I worked for their subsidiary and was sponsored by them many moons ago)

Thanks in advance!

Edit: she has a 4 year degree and holds a Filipino passport.

  1. As long as your wife can commit full time, I think ALT companies have few problems hiring her especially if she has experience or certificates already. Then they’ll convert it to instructor

  2. As long as your wife can find a full time job and the company is willing to sponsor (by sponsor it just means the company stamps the application form and send the necessary docs), your wife will be able to change to work visa.

If your wife has technical skills I recommend going to recruit agent. They’ll be able to introduce her to company’s that are willing to sponsor.

  3. If she’s a Filipina, assuming that she holds a Ph passport, it can be hard to find a company that will sponsor her. There’s a direct hire ban of Philippine Nationals as per POEA orders.

“The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has announced that any overseas recruitment done by any foreign company, including Japanese companies, will need to register with their system in order to contract Philippine nationals.”

As for ALT companies, the conditions for registration actually contradicts with the itaku-independent contract that offer instructors primarily because the contract is an independent contractor type offer rather than a company employment offer.
