Shiminzei and Kenminzei are being sent to me after switching jobs; crazy high

I understand that my shiminzei/kenminzei were probably handled by my previous companies, but I’m confused why I’m getting these now and want to ask:

1.) Why am I suddenly getting these bills? I will check with my company, but every other place I worked for handled these taxes directly, I. think. I’ve worked for three other places in Japan and this is the first time I’m getting taxes sent to me every quarter. I just received the 3rd quarter bill after paying the 2nd quarter bill in September.

2.) Am I charged on my salary rate of my last company? I took a significant salary reduction for this job (to get more experience/take a step back to another career path) and the taxes I’m getting are in the 250,000 yen range. This is a big hit for me now and after calling the tax office, they are sending me the 4th quarter Shiminzei/Kenminzei at the end of January.

  1. Those are charged against last years income, so, they will go down next year with your lower paying job.

Chances are your new employer isn’t paying them or you haven’t brought the paperwork to them to get set up so they can directly pay them. Bring the bills to the HR equivalent and they should sort it out. Or you might be working for a small/shitty company that doesn’t offer that to their employees in which case you have my sympathy. You should be able to tell though by looking at your pay stubs.

Another option is if you haven’t sorted it out where the company pays for you you will get 2 sets of bills, one for installments and one gigantic bill for a lump sum. You’ll need to pick one or the other to pay if the company doesn’t start paying them for you.

    Good luck sorting this out.

  2. The due dates are generally: end of June, end of August, end of October, end of January. That is why they are piling up. It won’t be any less, just more spread out if the company pays.

You can pay by credit card and get miles, points etc…

  3. When you receive them yourself they are paid in four payments rather than monthly. If you take them to your company your company will implement the payment into your salary deducting it monthly.
