Does going on business trip overseas reset or risk your “consecutive residence in Japan” requirement for PR / Naturalization?

Although not yet decided when, there is a plan for business trip overseas in the next few months, so I just wanted to confirm just to be safe and for peace of mind.

Would really appreciate any insight. Thank you!

  1. of course it’s absolutely okay. you’re leaving for a few days/weeks right? just check the I’m returning within a year on the white reentry permit at the immigration.

your PR counter would be reset if you left Japan permanently and unregistered from health insurance/etc

  2. It’s not so much documented, but yes, technically time outside the country per trip/per year can negatively affect your “consecutive residency” for PR/naturalization (see here: https://www.turning-japanese.info/2013/02/what-if-your-residency-isnt-continuous.html)

That said, would a genuine business trip be used against you? Maybe, yes. Maybe, no. I’d say just make your to include the details in your PR/naturalization application.

Edit: if you file your moving out of Japan paper work (I.e cease residency. I.e.e remove yourself from the resident register and leave Japan) then you can bet your ass your “consecutive residency” will be affected regardless if business trip outside of your control or not.

  3. The count will reset if you stop paying residence tax.
I went for biz trip for 3 months this year and no problem so far

  4. Tons of people visit their home country.
Residing in Japan means your residence/domicile in Japan not your presence. Just like taking a vacation to Okinawa won’t change residence. If you leave for reasonably long time, they might deduce you moved out . But no reasonable person would think you moved out for a week.
