What’s the deal with the shoe quality in Japan?

Is it only me or do even more expensive shoe brands in Japan have worse quality compared to what you can get overseas? I am talking about anything besides sneakers… Everything seems to have rather cheap material and is made in China. In Europe, they pay attention to healthy posture and feet health, so you have some brand options with high quality material and shoe soles.
I can see that some Japanese brands recently try to make their heel shoes a little bit more comfortable by adding some cushioning, but I would prefer some high quality flat shoes with a good profile sole that don’t make my feet bleed…

  1. I believe that there is a high leather import charge/duty. That’s why many shoes are “premium” in cost, but really just overpriced. It makes imported leather shoes brands more costly too.

  2. What brands are you buying? What stores are you frequenting?

If you want high quality shoes here, then you need to pay more.

  3. Dunlop shoes have been pretty good for me. They actually have wide enough shoes for my feet (6E) and seem pretty durable. I have been wearing my current pair of walking/running shoes everywhere for almost 2 years.
