Getting a quick ADHD diagnosis in Tokyo

After having looked into it some, I’m 99% sure I have ADHD and would like to get diagnosed. I’ll be going on a 2 month holiday next week and wondering if it’s possible to get diagnosed and prescribed meds (if needed) within that time. Or is it a long drawn out process? Also, does nat’l ins cover it? How much are the expected costs involved?

I am already aware to avoid Dr. Ronald McDonald. lol

  1. Hundreds and hundreds posts about it in this sub. Almost once per day.

You’ve lived all your life fine without meds. I’m sure you can survive another 2 months holiday.

  2. Is there a chance your self-diagnosis is wrong? Would you accept the response if a medical professional told you you were wrong?

From here is just seems like you want drugs.

  3. I doubt you’ll find a clinic with availabilities on such short notice, but you can always try. You’ll need to find a doctor that is licensed to prescribe ADHD medication.

Assuming you get diagnosed, they will start you off on a low dose of whatever they prescribe and they might make you come back after two weeks to see how it’s working. They cannot prescribe more than a month of ADHD medication.

  4. Getting diagnosed is not an easy process, especially in Japan. You need to have/build a relationship with your doctor etc etc.
Any time I hear the words “quick” or “easy” in regards to an ADHD diagnosis, it’s easy to assume the person is trying to get pseudo-speed before their holiday etc.

There’s a 99% chance you *don’t* have ADHD. You’re an ape living through late-stage capitalism, with a commodified attention span and an automatic dopamine dispenser in your pocket.

  5. I got it within two hours of deciding I wanted to go back on it in JP. Print a referral letter in English and say you were medicated in the US but need to refill in Japan.

In my case this was actually true, but the letter was just something I typed up as I didn’t remember my doctors name in the US.

  6. i got diagnosed in japan. took months and medicating for other stuff before even filling out the questionnaire thing they do

  7. Others have said that already and I’ll reiterate. Diagnosing ADHD and ASD is no simple task. Besides, if you weren’t diagnosed in the earlier age, there’s a fat chance you don’t have it, since these disorders are usually more pronounced in the toddler years. As you might have figured, a detailed analysis of your biography and early life is necessary, as well as the evaluation of impairments if you have any.

Now, I have to remind you that it’s not cool to have ADHD. Walking around and telling others that you have ADHD unless you have a solid diagnosis is not just stupid, it inflates the diagnosis causing direct damage to those who struggle with this disability.

Also, if you think that you’ll get free amphetamines in Japan just because you were diagnosed (unlikely), then I have sad news for you, because unless you have serious disabilities you won’t get any strong drugs. There are better ways to get high.
