I’m having a surprisingly difficult time finding a book that serves as a very general history of the country. The best match I’ve found is [A History of Japan](https://www.amazon.co.jp/History-Japan-R-H-Mason/dp/080482097X), but it’s 25 years out-of-date.
Can anyone suggest a book that summarizes the major periods of Japanese history from its earliest inhabitants to at least 2015-ish? Worst case, I can just read the book I linked above and fill in the blanks afterwards, but I’d love to find something written from a more recent perspective.
