JR railpass as a foreign resident. Is it possible?

So, the JR railpass seems to be an amazing deal. Except residents aren’t allowed to use it, as it’s only for tourists.

Is there anything preventin foreign residents from actually buying it? Is there some proof required to buy/use the pass?

Anybody have any experience or insights into using the railpass as a resident?

  1. To pick up the pass you need to bring your passport and they will likely check what type of entry permit you have. If you somehow got your hands (illegally) on a permit, it is highly unlikely any station agent would check the passport carefully though.

  2. You can’t buy the normal JR railpass as a resident. Yes, they ask to see your passport at the JR office. Since you don’t have a temp visitor sticker…you won’t be able to buy it.

There are some regional passes that can be bought as a resident.

  3. I believe when you go to redeem it, they’ll check your passport and make sure you’re only in the country on a 90 day tourist visa.

  4. I think you are out of luck. From my understanding you can only get them in your home country, also have to be a tourist.
