I am having some trouble and I’m not sure what to do, I know some basic Japanese and grammar and I was trying to read draemon manga and I came across a sentence that I was pretty confident in knowing.
「ドラえもんに話は聞いたろ」
I felt confident about what this would be in English because I know the words meaning. I read it as:
“draemon can speak as well as ask questions.”
But in the official English translation it means. “draemon told you everything right?”
How?, 話 can’t mean “told” because it is not in past tense form and 聞 means to ask, listen/hear and appears nowhere in the English version. So where are they getting “told everything” from?
It is frustrating that even though I somehow understand the meaning, the sentence itself always seems to be different when I try to check it my accuracy.

I’m a learner but from what I can get from the sentence:
「ドラえもんに」means “From Doraemon”
「話は」 means the “talk/whatever they are talking about”
「聞いた」means “told/heard from”
「ろ」means what I would guess to be a shortened version of 「だろう」
Together they mean “Doraemon told you about the thing(whatever the context puts it to), right?”, alternate meaning could be “You heard the thing(context) from Doraemon, right?”.
You are correct about 話 not meaning “told”, its 聞いた that means “told” or similar to it. Also I’m curious as to how you translated it? No matter how much I try, I don’t get how you came to that conclusion. Would be interesting to hear!
