Is Anki a good way to learn vocabulary?

I started learning Japanese a few days ago. I know hiragana and katakana but that’s pretty much it. I wanted to learn some vocabulary so it would be easier for me to start doing grammar later on so I downloaded the core 2k/6k deck but I saw someone say that anki is more for review than learning. I don’t know enough Japanese to consume any media so I can’t sentence mine to make my own cards yet. Would learning the 2k/6k deck be beneficial right now or should I just continue with wanikani?

  1. Anki is great for learning, I find that the large core 2000 anki decks are better for reviewing than studying. I make anki decks of the things I’m currently studying, so for each chapter of genki I will add all the new words I see. Or if I want to read Crystal Hunters, I’ll find a deck made with the vocab for the first volume of crystal hunters.

  2. Anki is great for *reviewing* vocabulary. Anki, even with decks that have example sentence, isn’t sufficient for providing context rich information.

You can learn from it, but your exposure will be limited until you start seeing the material in a better context.

Pairing Anki with a textbook, grammar guide or native source material will give you a better foundation to then use Anki to review the vocabulary you’ve learned with.
