Recommendations for areas to live in

Hey everyone, I’m going to be abroad in Tokyo for two months and was looking for recommendations for areas to live in and/or areas to definitely avoid. I’m moving from the US and will Some of the things I’m looking for are areas that are livelier and safe. I’m planning on working in the apartment/ airbnb that I live in so maybe not someplace where it’s incredibly loud 24/7. Thanks ahead of time!

  1. I don’t have too much knowledge of areas to stay, obviously the closer you get to center of tokyo, the more livelier, but also more expensive.
Tokyo’s safety put almost any US city’s to shame. Women can safely walk alone at night. That said I guess maybe some areas like kabukichou can be a little sketchy, but not very much. Most people keep to themselves.

Just avoid anyone harassing you on the street or promising you a good time. They might drug you at a bar and overcharge you.

  2. Everywhere in Tokyo is safe. Or at least safer than where you’re from, probably.

  3. I suggest in Setagaya ward. Sangenjaya is a great area and a little pricy but still cheaper than central Tokyo. Lots of shopping, restaurants, coffee houses, stores, etc. Just a few minutes from Shibuya but sill having greenery

If not there than any place along the Denentoshi line.

    My two yen.

  4. Nippori in northern Tokyo! Quiet and still very accessible to the exciting parts.

  5. If you’re only there for two months, I would place a priority on locations with convenient access to public transportation, and stations with convenient access to the rest of the city. That way you aren’t wasting time and energy with multiple transfers and long commutes since presumably you’ll want to explore the city often.

Find a place within a ten minute walk to the station, maybe on the Yamanote line or with easy access to one of the major stations on the line. That should get you easy access to the rest of the city.

  6. Were are you supposed to be commuting to, because that’s the most important thing that will impact where you live…

Crossing Tokyo North-South would be close to 90 mins depending on the location, East-West can be longer.

  7. What’s your budget and how big of a place do you want?

Nakameguro has lots of good food options around, and cafes if you’re tired of being at home, but it’s not the cheapest area. It’s also very central.

  8. You’ll pretty much just get everyone telling your their fave parts of Tokyo since it’s all pretty safe. I’m a big fan of Nakano, close but not right in the center, easy to get elsewhere in Tokyo. Lots of character and interesting bars/resturants in the area.
