Physical disability Shogaisha Techo – Shinkansen discount?

I’m a foreign resident. I’ve recently applied for and will soon be picking up my disability book due to severe hearing impairment among other issues. My gut says no but does the disability book give a discount on Shinkansen tickets? particularly Osaka to Tokyo?

Thank you.

  1. Yes, it does. Take your te-cho along, you do have to buy tickets at a window. And I think you’re allowed an escort/partner to assist you–so that person gets a discount, too.

There are other discounts, such as admission fees–to a sightseeing spot, local public swimming pools, etc. Also, other transport discounts, which varies a little depending on your city/prefecture (e.g., city buses here are half price).

  2. With my disability book, I get a discount for myself and 1 adult on all train/subway rides if I am with a companion. Just show it at the ticket window and give them you and your companions Suica/pasmo.

Same thing on most other transportation tickets like buses, ferries, ropeway, etc.

Don’t forget to also check with your utilities. Discounts on gas, water, and, in my case, cable/internet/cell phone with AU.

  3. Yes, you can get discount.
My wife has shogaisha techo. Some of the discounts / free things you can get are great.
i.e Free city bus travel – 都営バス, Free city car tax – for her K-car.

  4. Yes, and to add what others have mentioned, 10% off all taxi rides – good when it’s a long one and adds up.

  5. If you drive, you can also get register your 障がい者手帳 to your ETC card and expressway fares are roughly half off. Many municipally operated places will allow you and a partner in for free. Certain parking lots will be discounted.
