hey guys I’m currently doing my year abroad in Japan and I’m doing a presentation about different tourist places and I wanted to use 名所 in my script but my teacher told me to use 有名な場所 instead but in my regular classes at home I get told to use 名所rather than 有名な場所 was wondering if there’s a reason for this? everyone in my class is at a N3/N2 level so everyone knows the word….

That sound like a why use a difficult word when there’s a simpler way to say it situation. Take this as advice on how to present naturally and not sound like a textbook.
What was the context in which you were encouraged to use each of these terms? Hoping a native/advanced speaker comes along to answer but in the meantime I’m interested in trying to figure this out…
名所 means “景色(けしき)の良さ(よさ)や、史跡(しせき)、特有(とくゆう)の風物(ふうぶつ)などで有名(ゆうめい)な場所(ばしょ) / Places famous for their scenic beauty, historical sites, and unique customs.
So I think some of 名所 can be famous tourist places, but that doesn’t mean all of them can be 観光地(かんこうち).
