Suggestions for finding a single room for lease? (To work from rather than live in)

I’m an artist living in Tokyo looking for a space to do (non-messy) oil painting. I currently live in a decent sized apartment, but I’m having a hard time staying focused/motivated to work at home, and want to find somewhere to work accessible by bike from where I live in Western Tokyo. (specifically Daikanyama, Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, Sangenjaya, Nakameguro, Komazawa, Setagaya vicinity)

I’ve looked into coworking spaces/offices but can’t find one that would allow me to oil paint/keep an easel and supplies on site. The few co-working ateliers I’ve seen are far enough away that I don’t think I would actually travel to use them.

There is a good likelihood that I will rent a dirt-cheap (25-35k yen) apartment nearby. However, even if rent is cheap, up front moving costs are still 200k yen or so.

Before I spend all that cash, I’m wondering if anybody has ideas of somewhere to ask around about maybe a homeowner who would rent out a room or something.

I’m imagining quietly spending 5-8 hours there 3-4 times a week. It’s a long shot, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

(I’m fluent in Japanese, so Japanese websites/contacts are no problem)

  1. I have no idea if it would work but I know some small eikaiwas work out of small, converted apartments like that. Maybe you could contact a few owners and ask if you could pay to use the space?
