Thoughts on Multiple Anki Cards for Same Word?

When I’m watching shows I typically make two cards for the same word. One as a vocabulary card and one as a sentence card.

Reasoning being I want to be able to recognize a word on its own without any context if I ever encounter it in the wild (vocabulary), and also being able to understand the word with context so I get the feel of how it’s supposed to be used (sentence).

But I’ve heard some people discourage having multiple cards for the same word through Anki. Thoughts? What does everyone else do?

  1. Very inefficient. If you are a casual learner and you deep down know that you’ll drop Japanese in no more than 2 years, then by all means do it, if it makes learning more fun/interesting for you. But if your plan is to learn dozens of thousands of words, having double, triple that amount in cards is not a good idea.
