  1. >”Terrace House,” killed herself in May 2020 after she was subject to intense harassment and abuse through social media by people who watched the show.

    >Her mother, Kyoko, 52, filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court on Dec. 6 seeking about 142 million yen ($1 million) in compensation.

    >“I wanted to avoid a court case, but I was forced to file the lawsuit because no sincere response was made by (the defendant companies),” Kimura said at a news conference held after the lawsuit was filed. “I do not want any further exploitation of the dreams of young people.”

    >The companies named in the suit are broadcaster Fuji Television Network Inc., production company E&W Inc. and East Factory Inc., which eventually took over production operations from E&W. When “Terrace House” was broadcast, E&W was known as East Entertainment Inc.

  2. >Kimura said she felt the producers treated the cast members like they were disposable.

That’s because to the producers they were completely disposable. Kyoko is doing the right thing. She deserves justice for what happened, and addressing this issue properly can potentially save more young people in the future.

  3. I used to watch that show off and on with my wife. The interactions between housemates were actually pretty tame and wholesome for a reality show. Unlike most western reality shows, it kind of felt like you were watching real people putting themselves out there. There were houseguests whose entire stay was just a boring drag because they didn’t cook up any artificial drama to make them more interesting than they were.

The hosts, however, were always the most insufferable, nasty bullies. Just a constant barrage of criticism and teasing and shaming, especially toward the female housemates.

It was incredibly toxic and mean-spirited. In later seasons, the producers even went so far as to show the housemates sometimes watching the episodes that had aired on TV while they were still in the house, so we could see their reactions to what the hosts thought of them.

I feel like all of that really set the tone for all of the online bullying that followed, which led to Hana’s suicide. I was hoping that after this tragedy those shitty people would all lose their careers over it, but nope, still going strong.

I hope she wins this case.
