I’m so sorry if this is the wrong place to post. I don’t know where the best place to ask this is. So, maybe y’all could help. Here’s a quick rundown:
I haven’t been home since 2018. I’m unvaccinated and want to be prepared for the prices of going through customs. The U.S. embassy site says I don’t need any proof of vaccination or PCR test to come home since I’m an American citizen. Does this matter that one lived outside of America during all of COVID?
Also, upon returning. What do I do? Do I need a PCR test to return to Japan?
I called all of the U.S. embassies and they all just put recorded messages on. (I forgot how cold American operators can be).
I’ve checked the websites, but I just really want to hear it from the horses mouth as to what I need to do. From what I understand, I don’t need to do anything to get in to America, but I need a doctor’s signature from a PCR test when returning to Japan. Is this all?
Again, I’m sorry if this is the wrong place to post this and thanks to any responses in advance.

Why are you unvaccinated?
You will need a PCR test to return to Japan unless you are triple vaxxed.
Vaccinations are free in America, IIRC.
To US: don’t need to do anything. Doesn’t matter where you lived, or if you’re unvaccinated, if you’re a US citizen.
To Japan: Negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure from the US.
You need your passport, that’s it. No one is going to ask about a vax and no one wears masks although you will have to wear one on the plane and you’ll see some people wearing them in the immigration line. I was there in August.
