  1. I mean, there’s it’s not like there is anything *stopping* you learn a word that isn’t written in Kanji…

How would you go about *normally* learning a word? Memorise the things through your choice of method, right? Or are you asking what some of those methods are?

  2. Hiragana is mostly used for grammatical stuff (suffixes on verbs for example) so you’ll learn that with your grammar portion.

Katakana is mostly used for foreign words – once you got the hang of it you’ll actually be able to guess their meaning a lot of the time, at least if they’re based in English.

But I mean, if you read an actual Japanese text and don’t know the hiragana phrases, you can always just look them up – that’s way easier than trying to look up a kanji (especially if it’s an actual book and not like online where you can copy & paste).

  3. I learned Japanese a long time ago, I’ve forgotten everything and now I’m trying to get back into it so I don’t know what Wanikani actually teaches you.

However, you seem to be under the impression that learning the most common kanji and some of their common use use will prepare you for anything. Unfortunately that’s not the case and you will always have to learn new words even after learning 2000 kanji.

All of that to say, like others have said, why does it matter? Learn it as you would any other word 🙂

  4. If you mean you’re looking for resources that would include both hiragana/katakana words as well as words written in kanji, I personally use Anki, the flash card app. Lots of folks like to build their own flash cards, but I personally like to use shared decks that are already built by others such as the Core series and JLPT Tango.
