Looking for some advice on kinda a weird situation.
Me and my boyfriend decided we want to move to Japan on student visas. I applied and was accepted to language school for an April 2023 start, but for complicated reasons he wasn’t able to apply until a July 2023 start, so he’ll move there 3 months later.
Since he can’t sign a lease until he gets his COE/VISA, we were thinking about packing all our stuff up in March and then I sign a 2year lease for a unit sized for two in Japan starting in April and he comes and stays with me on a tourist visa. Then when he gets his COE, he leaves Japan and comes back on a student visa and then we go to my apartment building and officially add him to the lease.
What do you think of this plan? I know it’s maybe not 100% above board but I’m not sure we have many other options as I understand it, I have to register an address within 15 days of moving. Would it be reasonable for me to find a smaller place to rent for 3 months while he stays in the US and then move to a bigger place once he arrives? An issue I foresee with that is most long term leases being 2 years, though, along with way too much extra moving…
Is there something else you’d recommend or anything I’m not considering? Thanks in advance!
(For full context we already live together and have been together for years)
