Is it possible to travel outside of Japan while the application for visa renewal is being processed?

I have applied for the renewal of a dependent visa and the dependent visa holder is travelling out of Japan for 1 month. Visa expiry date fails within the one-month travel period.

I heard that applying for a renewal visa will extend the expiry date by 2 months and the person whose visa is under renewal can travel out of Japan as long as they enter Japan before the two-month grace period expires.

Did someone experience a similar situation and is the 2-month grace period legit?

It is possible to travel outside of Japan while the application for the visa renewal is being processed as long as you will come back to Japan before the end of this 2 months’ extension.
In the case your application is rejected, a new temporary status will be given, which will allow you to prepare for the departure.

  1. You cannot. Your application gets cancelled if you leave. My only source is asking an immigration officer that exact question because I wanted to do the same.

  2. Best advice is don’t. When that postcard arrives you have a limited time to go pick up your new card. If you miss it, you’ll only complicate things for yourself. Wait until you get the new residence card before you travel. Or travel before you submit the renewal papers.

  3. Whenever a visa is being renewed don’t leave the country, just don’t. I could give you a list of administrative reasons why not but the tl;dr version is don’t do it.

  4. I think by the 2 month extension, it only means that if you get checked within the country, you can show the stamp behind that it is still ‘being renewed’ and you won’t get deported.

Probably not a good idea to be travelling out during the renewal is taking place.
