Why is it so rare to find an apartment with more than 1 toilets?

I just moved to Tokyo and been doing apartment hunting. I’m looking for 3+ bedrooms and at least 1.5 bathrooms (1 bath + 2 toilets) but it’s been so rare to find one, and there’s no search conditions/filters on suumo for this. Is this a common thing in Japan? Any advice on how I can search specifically for apartments with 2 toilets without having to go through each listing?

Thanks so much!

  1. Talk to a realtor in the local area and give them your requirements. Something to think about is Suumo isn’t necessarily open units, it’s full of outdated units or units are listed haphazardly by the realotrs. It’s always best to visit a realtor and see what’s actually available in an area once you decide on one you like.

  2. That’s one of those things that you’re only likely to find for houses, two floor apartment/town houses, or particularly large/pricey places. Can show up among bunjo manshon too. But basically more than one toilet to say nothing of a master and guest bath is incredibly rare here.

Why is it rare? A culture of poverty! (or convivial living) Lack of space! Cookie cutter buildings! I dunno, take your pick.
