I was just checking out a bunch of my old haunts in Ikebukuro. Although some of the shops are still there, they’ve mostly been transformed into super deluxe print club floors, or UFO catchers.
Hiya, I’m in Tokyo right now and just spend the better part of the day exploring Akihabara. I spent a good 2 hours between 2 separate Gigo Arcades, I believe they were 5-6 floors of claw machines and arcade games. Enjoy!
Made a brief pass through Akihabara earlier this week. The Sega outside the electric town exit is shuttered. Just across Chuo Dori by the tracks it’s still open but has been rebranded. Can’t say I paid attention to what happened to the one a couple doors down or the big one overlooking the corner by the Maneseibashi though.
I guess it depends what you’re looking for but Taito Hey in Akihabara and Mikado in takadanobaba are still kicking.
I don’t remember either being as big as the flagship old SEGA arcades but their game selection was always top notch.
But my first trip to Japan post COVID isn’t until March so I don’t have any current first hand knowledge.
Yeah we just got back and spent a good bit of time in arcades. For the life of me I can’t quite remember where we were that had a 6 floor one but I believe it was Akihabara, one of the Taito or something. There’s a few in Shinjuku but mostly seemed to be claw games or Pachinko.
If you want to play a bunch you can grab a konami card which saves progress. Some games will need it like the Gundam one with the cockpit.
Yes there are definitely the arcades and they are still pretty much the same and still as popular. Sega changed to GIGO, I believe. Just left Tokyo a few days ago and there was an arcade in pretty much every district. Spent one night playing retro games drunk at GIGO (I think) in Akihabara and it was a ton of fun.
