I will travel to Europe early next year with Qatar or Emirates. I have a Rakuten premium credit card, I know that I need to book my flight with it to be able to use the travel insurance benefits.
A Japanese friend of mine told me that if it’s a transit flight I won’t qualify for insurance, only direct flights are covered. I don’t believe this to be true but still want to confirm it.
Any help would be appreciated.

‘In order for the insurance to be valid, you must have paid the price corresponding to the “Agent-organized tour fee” with a Rakuten Card with conditions of use before leaving the Japan.’

‘What is a recruitment-type planned tour?
A tour in which a travel agency prepares a travel plan that stipulates in advance the destination and schedule of the trip, the contents of transportation or accommodation services that the traveler can receive, and the amount of the travel fee to be paid by the traveler to the travel agency for the purpose of recruiting travelers. Please check with your travel agent for details.’
Don’t book the flights by yourself, you have to go thru their rakuten approved travel agency tour which most often than not are pretty expensive to begin with. Sounds like a pretty shitty deal to me.
Your friend is wrong. It doesn’t matter what method of transportation you used, as long as you pay using your credit card.
You don’t even have to use it for purchasing the flight ticket, even paying train fare, bus fare or taxi fare using credit card (including charging your Suica) to the airport is enough to activate the overseas travel insurance.
