Can bike bags be shipped in Japan or taken on trains?

I have my own high end bike bags that I use for when i fly to different bike competitions. I’ll be moving to Japan in February and I’m bringing two race bikes with me. Do shipping services only ship bikes in cardboard boxes or can they take genuine padded bike bags? Alternatively could I them on local trains? I wouldn’t be taken them on shinkansen as I’m using local trains to get to Yamanashi Prefecture where I’m going to be staying.

  1. You can bring bikes in bike bags on trains.

I’m not sure if sending without box is possible.

  2. Not exactly answering the question but just be aware as your bicycle can not be registered in Japan as it was not bought there*, you will want to always have some proof of purchase with you whenever riding the bicycle, in case the police want to have a word.

*At least I could not figure out how to register my road bicycle bought in UK and shipped over by Yamato
