I have a Rakuten account and I regularly buy stuff that I directly ship to friends in Japan. This works. However, I just tried to buy new textbooks, ship them to a friend in Japan who could bring them to me soon. But „Rakuten books does not accept foreign credit cards“. Is there a way to circumvent this or do you know other Japanese bookstores with a good online shop that makes it possible to pay with a foreign cc?

Japanese Amazon. They ship directly to you as well.
Seconding Amazon Japan, I buy all my Japanese language books, games, and manga from there. You do need to create a separate account for it as they’re separate from the US, UK, etc. Amazon accounts.
