Long term time off work?

Hey guys,

I have a couple coworkers who have taken a long term period off work (several months; half a year or more) without actually quitting.
My understanding is that it’s related to mental health, (stress?) and that some of them experience physical side effects.
But I’m not quite sure, and none of them are super open to talking about it, so I was wondering if any of you know someone like this, and if anyone could explain what sort of diagnoses they would have?

TIA

  1. Presumably they have been diagnosed with depression by their specialist and have decided to take a leave of absence. Japanese labor law requires that the leave of absence be approved. Instead of the company not paying wages during that time, the health insurance union provides an injury and illness allowance. Dismissal is not permitted.
