Seeking advice on moving to Fukuoka

Hey dear redditors. I hope you are having a good day.

So recently I’ve landed a full-remote gig, and I’ve been seriously thinking about moving to Fukuoka. So I want to hear some insights from people who have lived in the area.

A little more background story: I have been living in Tokyo for nearly 6 years and have been to a lot of the famous or not-so-famous places that are reachable within a day. I’ve been longing for new places to explore, that’s when I went to Fukuoka for the first time on a business trip.

I kind of instantly fell in love with the city. It has a nice combination of nature and moderness, mountain area and waterfront. It has just the right size for me coming from somewhere similar. The food is good, the rent is also much more reasonable compared to Tokyo. And there are enough shopping malls for me to get what I want.

What’s more important is that the people there are more energetic and lively. The Yadai by the river, live street performances, and a LOT of young people. Here in Tokyo everyday I mostly see grumpy old people and salary-man who look dead inside. All in all it was a breath of fresh air for me.

However, I am aware of all that made me sound like a newly married couple who can only see the good things in their partners. So I want to hear some realistic opinions from people who’ve been living in Fukuoka. What are the down sides I can’t discover in my short trip? What do you dislike about the city? Would you recommend this place for people from outside? Any honest feedback is welcome, Thank you so much.

  1. I love Fukuoka. It’s a big, vibrant city that’s not as big as Tokyo and much more livable.

  2. I’ve lived here for ages. The biggest downside is trying to keep quiet about how good it is because otherwise everyone would want to move here
