Question on transport passes

Hi! I am planning a trip for 2 to Japan. I plan to go for about 9 days, so I was wondering which transport pass I should get to make the best of my money. Unsure whether to go with just a suica/pasmo card and individually purchase shinkansen tickets or to go with the JR pass😞

Here’s my rough itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive at Kansai airport, head to the hotel at Shinsaibashi before going to Dotonburi.

Day 2: Board a Shinkansen towards Kyoto for a day trip there. Will be visiting Kinkaku-ji and Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, hopefully Fushimi Inari as well if time permits.

Day 3: Roam around Osaka for abit before boarding a sleeper bus towards Tokyo

Days 4-6: Check in to Hotel at Nihonbashi. Visiting Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara and Koto City(for teamlab Planets)

Day 7: Day trip to Kawaguchiko and Chureito Pagoda

Day 8: Ginza and Art Aquarium Museum

Day 9: Head towards Narita Airport from Nihombashi

Hope to make the trips by train/metro/bus where possible, any advice is appreciated!🙏

  1. There is no reason to take the shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto unless you just need to experience a shinkansen and this is your chance. The shinkansen is maybe 5-10 minutes faster than a Special Rapid Local train, and you are likely to already be on one when you catch a JR train from Osaka Station towards Shin-Osaka.

You have an open jaw airline ticket and you are planning to take the night bus between Kansai and Tokyo, there is no reason to get a JR Pass.

You are mostly likely better off taking the bus from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko. It’s cheaper than the train.

You’re likely to get an ICOCA IC Card. You might want to get this deal from JR West:
