Ichidan and Godan verbs

So I’ve learned that what is usually taught to begginers, that all verbs ending with -iru or -eru are ichidan, while all the others (except する and 来る) are godan, is not quite true. For example, 知る is godan.

But I have a question, while not all -iru/-eru ending verbs are ichidan, if a verb is ichidan, it has to end with either -iru or -eru, right?

  1. If a verb ends with an ‘iru’ or ‘eru’ sound then it’s likely (but not guaranteed) to be ichidan.

If a verb **does not** end with an ‘iru or ‘eru’ sound then it is godan.

Edit: So ‘yes’ to your question.

  2. all ある、おる、うる verbs are godan

    all ichidan verbs are いる、える

not all いる、える verbs are ichidan but most are

here’s a mostly complete list of exceptions, there might be some extremely rare or older verbs not on it, but this is fairly complete: [https://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/which-godan.html](https://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/which-godan.html)
