What expenses should I be prepared to pay ?

I’m currently a student who will be graduating next March. I managed to secure a job in Tokyo and will start working there next April. What are the expenses that I will 100% have to pay (Such as taxes) ? I’ve been a student for 3 years and the only thing I know so far is 所得税.

  1. Over the next few years all of your friends will start to get married one by one. Keep 3万 in the bank for each lucky bastard.

  2. Just to give a head up. Your company will take care of this so you don’t have to do anything.

    – 所得税: income tax, you will get deducted every month, but there will be year-end adjustment 年末調整 to get the true number.
    – 住民税: residence tax, for your 1st year you won’t be paying anything since it is calculated based on the last year income. Prepare to see your take-home pay got reduced, by not an insignificant amount, by June 2nd year.
    – 社会保険: social health insurance. Your company will calculate this for you.

Now there are ways to reduce your tax (like registering overseas dependents, if you’re sending money to your parents regularly) but I’ll leave that for later.

Good luck on your new job! I still remember my fresh-graduate experience. It taught me a lot, cherish it!
