What are your favorite places in Tokyo? Moving from Kansai to Tokyo soon.

Hi everyone.
My husband (Japanese) and I (American) are moving from Kyoto to Tokyo from next Spring. He’s lived in Kyoto all of his life, and I’ve been living in Kansai ever since I moved to Japan five years ago.

We definitely feel excited for our move but also nervous because there are so many places to see and things to do in Tokyo, and we want to enjoy newly wed life before having kids in 1-2 years.

My relatives will also visit Tokyo for five days in Spring and asked me to show them around, but I’d also be completely new to living in Kanto. Of course I’ve considered the usual tourist spots, but I’d like to ask people here on what their favorite places are or what places make living in Tokyo enjoyable/memorable.

Thank you!

  1. For clarity, are you asking for places to hang out or places to live? The recommendations will probably vary wildly based on that answer. There’s a lot of spots where I like to go play, but I wouldn’t want to live in many of those spots due various reasons that make them not good for raising a family.

Also, do you have any particular hobbies or interests? One thing that’s amazing about Tokyo is that there are little bubbles around the city where specific interests thrive.

  2. Try Shibamata. It’s cheap, very active during weekends and people are nice. Shitamachi vibe.

  3. Where you will be working is a big factor, unless you’re both remote. Choosing something on the same train line will save you a heap of hassle.
