Changing jobs/Working part time before PR application

Allo allo!

I know (Probably) nobody’s a lawyer, and that the rules for these things are usually super fuzzy and vary place to place, person to person, but I have some questions about PR since I’m hoping to apply for it via the 10 year route in 2 years time.

Right now I’m tying to switch jobs and move back to Tokyo from Okinawa. I feel like I heard that changing jobs in the year previous to PR application can look bad, so it’s best to have had a stable job for a couple years prior. Is that right?

My old job has a part time position I can take, so I might take it, move back, and see what other work I can find to fill in the gaps until a full time place there opens up. If I can’t go full time there within the year, will working multiple part time jobs have any affect on PR application? Is your yearly salary/Savings taken into account?

Maybe I’m worrying too far into the future, but I’ve been banking on PR for a long time! If anyone knows, thank you in advance <3

  1. I don’t think changing jobs would impact you at the 10 year mark. I would just recommend having some savings 500K ~ 1M yen at least & a steady job that supports your current visa.
You still have to be able to work within your current visa, I would recommend having one job that supports your lifestyle.

  2. Changing jobs and temporarily having a reduced income is not necessarily an issue. But as you need to provide immigration with proof of income as part of the application for PR, were your income to significantly drop due to working part-time you may have a more difficult time obtaining PR.

Working multiple jobs that fall under the status of your SOR is not necessarily an issue (this is how the so-called “self-sponsorship” can occasionally work), but it is generally true that immigration prefers to see stable employment.

Yearly income, stability, and overall financial situation are all part of the calculus.
