Is it to early to start applying for jobs in late January/February?

I’m currently jobless and have returned to my home country for Christmas, returning to Japan in the middle of January.

I’m on a spouse visa with no restrictions on what I can do and would like a job more or less as soon as I come back.

Looking for part-time work, as a dishwasher, warehouse worker etc.

Do you think it’s alright for me to start applying now and stating when I’ll be back? Or will employers just be pissy?

  1. You should just apply and let them know. Either they don’t mind the wait time (probably filling it with various document requests anyway), or they’ll say “lol no” and would have never had the opening available based on your timing anyway.

  2. It’s actually pretty standard. If you were on a contract that expires at the end of march, most employers who are planning on downsizing will start letting you know about now so that their employees can start your job hunt in a timely manner. (I’m thinking temp workers 派遣 and fixed term contractors 契約社員). Many workplaces have a lengthy multi stage interview process and starting the hunt now would be ample to have enough offers to draw a good comparison and get the best offer.

  3. Nah you’re fine. Most people need to give a months notice anyway if they’re moving from one job to another, so you’re working with the same timeframe most job openings would expect.

  4. Do you speak Japanese? If so, you can find a part-time job in literally no time. Most places will hire anyone with a pulse
