Ice spike recommendations?

What with the annual ice hell coming upon us, I want to be prepared for it so as to not break my tailbone (again). I’ve heard that ice spikes are a good way to get traction so you don’t fall and bust your ass on the luge-like streets. Curious if anyone has a brand they recommend, especially for those of us whose body type could be classified as “big chungus”. In other words, some that won’t bend under fat person weight.

  1. Ordered a pair of kahtoola nanospikes myself, will let you know how they work. In the meantime, I’ve found my regular old hiking poles with carbide tips to be a complete gamechanger. It’s so stable I will probably continue to use them even after the nanospikes arrive. I never see people recommend this for some reason (probably afraid of looking stupid) but trust me, it beats a bad fall.

  2. I’ve used the cheap spikes you can get in any DIY store. They’re pretty good but don’t really stay in place. They are cheap though.

  3. Do you have some old possibly hole ridden worn out socks? In a bind you put those over your shoes and you’ve dramatically reduced the risk of slipping. And then you throw them out. Just a thought until your spikes of choice arrive.
