I’m thinking in applying for PR visa, but since I’m currently engaged to a person who has it already I was wondering if it would just be unnecessary extra work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
No. Naturally a status of residence only applies to one person.
This is possible but you’ll have to be married for 3 years and lived in Japan for more than 1 year before applying: [https://www.juridique.jp/visa/pr.php](https://www.juridique.jp/visa/pr.php)
It might make it easier, but you’d still need to apply for it.
It will be the same rule as being married to a national resident
Which means at least 3 years of marriage and at least 1 year being in Japan with the spouse visa
And of course a stable job /enough money to live, guarantors etc…
