jury duty in japan

I’m stuck doing jury duty in the US today, and I was realizing that I never really heard the subject mentioned in Japan, wether in media or in conversation. I looked it up, and it looks like it does exist, and Japanese juries also deciding the punishment, which a judge would do in the US

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it, or insight into why it doesn’t get talked about very much
