I am hoping to get some, constructive, advice on how I could increase my prospects, and look into working in IT in Japan. Long story short, I’m in my mid 20s, recent career change, just started an IT apprenticeship. I know it won’t be quick and easy. I have and will do further research, but any additional, constructive, words of advice or warning on what I can do between now and the foreseeable future will be so helpful.
P.s. I say constructive, as I don’t want overly negative comments about how saying difficult or impossible it will be. Trust me, I know. I just want practical advice I can work on and towards, for a potentially a lifelong goal.

Keep in mind that you’ve not only got to satisfy the requirements of the company that will hire you, you also need to satisfy the requirements of immigration who will grant you permission to come and live in Japan. While employers may treat certifications or portfolios as equivalent to an education, immigration does not.
So first and foremost, make sure you’ve got a degree. Obviously a related degree is best, but from an immigration perspective it’s not important what the degree is for.
From an employer perspective, if they’re looking for foreign talent it’s important that you’ve got a few years of experience. Fresh no-experience candidates are a dime a dozen here and get paid accordingly. If you want that dime all to yourself you need foreign experience.
Good luck!
