Rakuten is eyeing me as to join their Project team. I already completed 3 interviews (2 technical interview with an Indian national) and 1 HR interview (Japanese national).
I was told it will take 3 weeks to get the final offer sheet completed due to their internal approval process and 3 months to get a working visa from the japanese embassy.
The work I applied for is a project manager that will be based in Tokyo. I was asked what will be my salary expectation , obviously i dont have an idea what is standard pay grade in the Tokyo area , i only checked glassdoor what is the current market paygrade for this role. It was suggested a high of 12mY/yr and a lowest of 7mY/yr.
I did recalled that during the screening process, i was asked what will be my salary expectation and i remember i wrote 9mY/yr. I have 16 years solid of project management experience. Im not sure if this the right salary expectations.
Does anyone has similar experience here?

Seems a bit lowball if you have that much XP….
What prevents you from asking 12M ?
Don’t ever give the first number, but if you’ve said 9m you’ve made that mistake already. Decide what you think you’re worth, add 20% and ask for that. Even if they offer you 9m, you have the right to turn around and say that “after more research into the market conditions, I believe that [..]”. You’re not going to get any significant raise when you’re there, so it’s paramount you get what you’re worth straight away. And that means accounting for a few more years since you won’t get those raises either.

Oh, and negotiate some sort of relocation bonus.
