Certificate of Eligibility Extension

Hello everyone!

I have just receive my COE from Japan, and for some reason HR decided to send me 2 MONTHS after the COE got approved, leaving me around 2 weeks from now to get my Visa done and get into Japan. After a call to the Embassy, it seems like the Visa can be made within a week and has it’s own expiry date.

I am wondering if it is possible to extend my COE by a certain period? and,

Is it possible to enter Japan with a valid Visa but expired COE?

I have tried to do some google but everything related to COE extension was about the COEs issued before June 2022 while mine was issued on September 30th

Would appreciate any opinion and thank you for reading my post

Yes. AFAIK the only purpose of your COE is to get your visa. Incidentally, these questions are something you could/should also be able to discuss with the Embassy!

  2. Its the visa expiry date they will worry about
When you give your CoE to the embassy, they won’t give it back. You’ll have your visa instead, with the new expiry date.

  3. I was advised by an immigration service company that I must land in Japan within 3 mos of COE being issued, regardless of what the visa says.

I didn’t ask for a reference, but just now I looked up the MOFA website, and reading the following two web pages together, it seems to agree with what I was told.

https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/guide/kanri_qa.html. (See Q6 which mentions landing application)

https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/system/index.html. (Describes visa and landing permission.)

I would suggest contacting the embassy and/or the immigration services company your employer used to get advice for your specific situation.

  4. The COE is only to get your Visa. Once your Visa is approved you have 90 days to enter the country. You are fine.
