More sought-after in Japan: Data analytics or cloud computing?

Hi all,

Currently planning to make a career switch to tech (coming from mainly a language-teaching/business admin background) and move to Japan.

I already have Japanese citizenship so visa isn’t an issue – but I was wondering for those who are already there & working, between data analytics and cloud computing, which would you say is more in-demand these days?

I have been taking online courses and working on a portfolio, more in cloud computing. Also working on getting the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate cert. However, from the open positions I see online, data analytics might be more common there?

Thanks in advance, any feedback would be greatly appreciated 🙂

  1. Really your cup of tea, both are hot right now.

That being said, many companies have finally started moving off prem and the cloud industry is booming. The major players Amazon, Microsoft and Google are going all in when it comes to beefing up the cloud in Asia and there are so many job opportunities from hardware guys to software guys.

Stay away from job boards and look directly at the big players hiring pages. International companies won’t require Japanese as all their internal processes are done in English.

If you want to work for a Japanese company you need N2.

  2. Both are in very high demand, and neither will slow down any time soon I’d imagine. Really it comes down to your Japanese skill. If it’s good/native level then congrats on your job. If not then it’s seemed both fields still ask for at least N2 so your options are a little more limited.

  3. I don’t know anything about data analytics. It is a mystery. But somebody in marketing at my old company once asked how many “hits” our website had.

However, “cloud computing” is vaaaaaast. In fact, I’m typing cryptic UNIX commands into one of our VMs right now. Anything you learn for AWS, or any of the other vendors, will not be a waste of time. This knowledge will be incredibly useful no matter if you wind up elsewhere in computing.

Right now, you’re hopefully getting good with Linux.

  4. As the others said, they’re both in high demand. Putting aside which is more sought out in Japan, you should make your choice based on what you like to do because they are quite different.

Data analytics there’s a lot of business needs/questions you’ll be handling, presentations/reports to be done, visualizations to create. Your Japanese definitely needs to be business level if you work for a Japanese company.

Whereas cloud computing, it will be more technical, such a infrastructure, network, etc. You could get by with English since a lot of cloud services are from English companies like Google, Amazon, etc.

Since you don’t have experience in those fields, it might better for you to focus on aiming for a good work environment, irregardless of the location. If you find one in Japan, kudos to you. Good luck.
