I’m considering moving home and hating the usual assortment of scam fees that come with it, I’m thinking of aiming for a UR property.
Looking at [their website](https://www.ur-net.go.jp/chintai/), they don’t seem to have many vacancies in areas I am considering (or in general, really – most places seem full).
Is the website accurate or is there a shadow listing that is only viewable by their agents, much like the situation with Suumo/Homes and realtors? Is it worth visiting a shop even if one can’t find anything on the website?
Related to this: is there any sort of waiting list for UR properties one can be put into?

Go to one of their offices if you can. They will provide you with all info you want.
UR’s site is actually updated in real time, they are not an agent, so the listings on there are accurate.
UR rarely have vacancies, because like you say, without all that usual fees, people who got UR housing typically won’t leave at all. You just have to register for a waiting list and just pray someone move out.
You can also try JKK, they’re like UR but are run by each municipality (like Tokyo, or Kanagawa). I’ve lived in JKK housing before, and they were great for families. But yeah, you might not find vacancy just like UR. It’s just the way it is.
