Going abroad to Vancouver for a month, what to do about phone?

Someone I know is going to study abroad in Vancouver Canada and asked me about their phone. I have no idea.

Is international roaming with Japanese carriers expensive?

Would a pocket wifi or something be better?

She has AU.

  1. You pay $50 canadian at the first electronics store in the airport you get to to get a travel SIM, the nice clerk helps you activate it, you use that as your phone until you go home.

  2. So you know how to renovate a kominka and where to deal steroids, you eat dog food every day. But don’t know how phone plan works outside Japan?

Isn’t this some dorky humble brag about how you know a girl.

She’s Japanese. I’m sure she can figure out all the answers without you.

  3. Yes I went to canada this summer and although I had to unlock my phone (which was easily done on the docomo site, but for peace of mind do it before you go!) it was pretty easy to get a prepaid sim at a mall kiosk. Just make sure to hold on to the old sim and get a paperclip or something to open the little sim slot to put the old one back on the flight home. I had nothing and eventually got it open using a mechanical pencil lead.
