Watching a movie

Are movies here from the US dubbed in Japanese? Or are they subtitled in Japanese but keep the original language of the actors?

  1. On the cinema listings, 字幕 is a subtitled movie with original audio dialogue. 吹替 or 吹き替え is a dubbed movie.

Some movies, particularly kid’s movies, will only be available dubbed.

  2. The last time we watched an American movie at a theater it was in English with Japanese subtitles. That was before the pandemic, though, but I doubt anything has changed.

  3. Both. Hugely famous “blockbuster” movies often have both options, but most have only subtitles. Stuff like Pixar/Disney kids/family friendly animated movies generally only have dub (or only dub at most theatres. A few might have the sub option)

It will have SUB/字幕 written before it online/on the menu at the theatre if it’s subtitles. It will say DUB/吹替 if it’s dubbed.
